Blog changes

Thanks to everyone who followed Training Because I Can! over the last nine years. This blog started with Addison's Disease, hypothyroidism and a crazy idea of doing an Ironman distance triathlon. My life has changed and so has this blog. I am using this blog strictly for Addison's Support topics from here on out. I hope to continue providing people with hints for living life well with adrenal insufficiency.

DNFed at Big Horn

Oh well, it was a good attempt. I didn't manage to finish the race. Got to halfway and had to quit due to extreme nausea. Legs felt good and head was in the game, the guts wouldn't cooperate. I ended up on the medical cot for a few hours getting warmed up and had to get some oxygen. We got back to our motel room at 7 am.

I slept most of yesterday and all of last night.

Today I feel fine. My legs aren't sore but my shoulders are!

I think my quest to finish 100 miles is over. I don't think I have the desire to feel that kind of nausea on an elective basis. I'm not sure if the nausea was from the Addison's, my physical make up or for some other reason but it was not good.

Many thanks to all of you who sent positive vibes, nice messages and prayers! It made me smile to think of you all. Thanks to my husband Paul who did a lot of behind the scenes work to make this attempt possible.

Pictures to come when I get home.

Nancy I didn't finish but I sure did want to!!!!!!!!! XXXOOO to you!!!!!

Hey, don't give up yet... give it a few weeks (or months) to think about it.

Of course, I am NOT one to talk...

I DNF'd the 50 mile at only 18 miles!!!

I can't believe how embarassing that is!!!! My shortest DNF ever!

In past races, no matter how bad things went, I always made it to at least half or three-quarters of the way.

From mile 10 on, my lower bowels had sharp knife-like pain which only worsened with each step. It was excruciating, like the knife was twisting inside me.

I knew that as soon as I stopped it would go away, which it did. But the prospect of struggling to it to the next cut-off at mile 34 while bearing such pain made me decide that at least for this race, it would be better to just quit.

I have never had anything like that before and have no idea what made it come on which perplexes me and also worries me. Will it ever come back in future races?

Anyway, did you end up wearing that feather boa? I SWORE I saw a couple of pink feathers on the trail, but perhaps that was only a pain-induced hallucination.

It's really too bad we didn't get a chance to meet.

Keep in touch so we can meet at future races. My next race will be Lean Horse in August. I was thinking of doing the 100, but maybe I should do the 50 instead?

And don't you write off 100's completely yet... you CAN do it!

Dusty - Sorry you had trouble. Frustrating I'm sure, but ONLY half? Just 50 miles? You're a wuss.

Hey, I attended my first NADF support group meeting yesterday, PA/NJ chapter Jan runs. I mentioned you in the meeting and that you were running. Several members know your site and had good feedback. Keep it up. You are an inspiration, worldwide!

"Halfway" is still about 50 miles farther than 305 million Americans ran yesterday, with or without their adrenal glands. Congratulations on your valiant attempt, and your wonderful spirit, Dusty!

Thanks Michael, Heather and Jeff!!

Tom, I strapped the boa on the back of my bag just for you and, yes in deed, those were my feathers on the trail!! We were driving out as your buses were coming in, we waved.

Sorry about your pains and DNF. You must have had a heck of a time getting up that big hill and out Footbridge.I hope your pain went away as soon as you stopped.

:) Dusty
