Blog changes

Thanks to everyone who followed Training Because I Can! over the last nine years. This blog started with Addison's Disease, hypothyroidism and a crazy idea of doing an Ironman distance triathlon. My life has changed and so has this blog. I am using this blog strictly for Addison's Support topics from here on out. I hope to continue providing people with hints for living life well with adrenal insufficiency.

Lots of pictures and an update

July 3 Meara in Alaska Basin

The weather in Teton Valley, Idaho has finally turned warm and the snow in the high country is melting but still there!

My recovery from Bighorn (June) was minimal and I was out on the trail the day after I got home. Warning, Addison's content here! In retrospect, I'm quite sure my nausea and vomiting in Bighorn were due to an overdose of mineralcorticoid and over replacement of salt causing a drop in potassium. I doubled my florinef the day before and day of the race and took about 80 mg of HC during the day of the race making my total mineralcorticoid intake equivalent to about .5 of florinef!!! I also supplemented salt in the form of salt stick and electrolyte replacement. For my next race, I will keep my florinef to a minimum and replace salt as I start getting orthostatic hypotension. I think the increased HC makes up for the florinef...An experiment of one!!

After my rant below about being told I shouldn't do something, I promptly signed up for Swan Crest 100. I realize I have only finished one of four 100s that I've signed up for but I'm willing to keep trying to finish another! In the Bighorn, I feel like Addison's got in my way, not lack of training. Elise has generously offered to put me up at her house and pace me! I feel so lucky to have a local runner pacing me. I've never met Elise either so it's guaranteed that we will have so much to talk about for the 30 to 50 miles we run/walk/she holds my hair while I puke time we spend together. Thanks in advance Elise!!

Life has been crazy busy. I'm fortunate to still have my caretaking clients and I'm also teaching swimming lessons to children a few days a week. Running has been going well. The wildflowers are stunning right now and the trails are in excellent condition.

A staple sign in Teton Valley

This sign actually made me nervous

July 3, Alaska Basin. As of July 14, it's still socked in. On July 3, snow was 3 - 4 feet deep. Grand Teton in the background

July 3, Death Canyon Shelf in the background. Fresh Drymax socks on my feet in the foreground. Yes, I'm pushing these socks. They keep my feet comfortable and dry. They bring a smile to my face when I put them on. I've gotten very, very few blisters since starting to wear these socks. I love Drymax socks!

July 10, Zane and I hike to Wind Cave. See the cave in the background?

I think that Dusty is right because I don't have to up the FC as much as I need to take the extra salt (Salt Stix or Endurolux) in terms of excercising to an extreme level. This system is working really well for me this summer. Dusty, you are going to rock!

Your pictures are incredible. How can you ever stand to look at four walls after being surrounded by such beauty? Although, those bear warning signs are super-scary. Don't mess with the dead moose!! And, somehow, I don't think bear spray would be enough arsenal...shudder. I think I'd be spraying myself with pepper spray so I'd taste REALLY awful. Keep sharing!!
