Blog changes

Thanks to everyone who followed Training Because I Can! over the last nine years. This blog started with Addison's Disease, hypothyroidism and a crazy idea of doing an Ironman distance triathlon. My life has changed and so has this blog. I am using this blog strictly for Addison's Support topics from here on out. I hope to continue providing people with hints for living life well with adrenal insufficiency.

Are you kidding me? Winter weather advisory in Idaho

Winter Weather Advisory

Statement as of 3:45 AM MDT on May 23, 2010

... Winter Weather Advisory in effect from 6 PM this evening to
6 PM MDT Monday above 6000 feet...

The National Weather Service in Pocatello has issued a Winter
Weather Advisory above 6000 feet for snow and localized blowing snow... which
is in effect from 6 PM this evening to 6 PM MDT Monday.

* Snow accumulations: 3 to 7 inches

* elevation: above 6000 feet.

* Locations include: Driggs... Island Park... Edie ranch... Monida
Pass... Ashton hill... Targhee Pass... Pine Creek Pass

* winds: west to southwest winds of 10 to 20 mph will develop
later Monday

* impacts: snowfall and any winds that develop will create pockets
of reduced visibilities and/or blowing snow. This will
especially the case for higher elevation roadways.

Precautionary/preparedness actions...

A Winter Weather Advisory for snow means that periods of snow and
gusty winds will cause primarily travel difficulties. Be prepared
for snow covered roads and limited visibilities... and use caution
while driving.

29 days and counting to Big Horn

Stormy day!

That's right, 29 days and counting until Big Horn 100. How am I feeling? Nervous hell. I haven't prepped (med plan, food plan, medical info for staff, decided on clothing or found a place to stay) yet. As far as training goes, I'm pretty happy with it. I'm on the low end of mileage for doing a hundred but I'm OK with that. Before I did the Bear last fall, I had a LOT of miles under my belt and my body was a little achy (broken hip too) in general. Not so many aches and pains now. I'm pretty fatigued a lot of days by evening. I'm thinking of starting to take 5 mg HC extra when I run or walk 8+ miles. I keep forgetting to do that and now I'm paying for it.

Pictures from the last week.

Sharon, 5 miles is nothing. Look at how great she looks! South Fork Bench Trail.

The view from the road run portion of Sunday's run

Osprey nest. Look at the background. It's still winter here!!

Carlen's mud. Pink and muddy. My favorite colors. Aspen Trail.

I take a picture here every time I come. Thanks for humoring me Carlen!

Streak, day 89. 37 days until my first 100 of 2010!

Every pair of sneakers I have is wet and muddy, I like it!

I haven't posted any training stuff in a long time so I thought I'd throw it in here. Pictures below if you want to skip the words.

  • I've walked a minimum of one mile a day for 89 days now! Yahoo!
  • The formerly broken hip feels great. The only part that's sore are the weakened muscles.
  • My weekly mileage is right where I want it to be. I'm a little slow but feeling very good about the number of miles and how my body is feeling.
  • I'm feeling so good that I signed up for another 100 at the end of July. My friend Lora hooked me up with an awesome woman, ER, who is tough, knows the trail and wants to pace me!!!! Yahoo!!
  • Trails are few and far between so far. We've gotten hit with lots of late season snow and cold. I can't wait for spring!
Last week was a great running week. The best part was the weekend. I had a 28.7 mile (have to include the .7) run up and over Teton Pass with Meara and then I ran back alone. Meara's enthusiasm was contagious and we had an awesome time! Sunday I went out with Sharon and Corina for an 18 miler. Sunday evening I was sore and tired but Monday morning I felt fine! I'm doing something right. Additionally, on my long run, I was hungry the whole time and I kept eating without getting nauseous. Ahhhh small victories. The weekend before I had to long and good back to back runs too. Things are looking good.

"Aid station" at mile 12 of 18. Corina, Sharon and Buttercup get refueled for the trail.

Aspen Trail with Sharon and Corina

Meara showing her enthusiasm for running up and over Teton Pass. 15 miles and 2,000+ vertical elevation gain. Well done Meara!!

At the top of Teton Pass. 8,400 feet. An action shot. You're looking down into Jackson Hole behind us.

Steep, steep steep.

We looked over the Teton Pass guardrail and spied some trail and a moose. The moose wouldn't go away, turned it's back to us and started eating. We acted like tourists and took pictures. See the moose in the middle of the picture?

Glory Bowl in the background

Looks like winter, eh? Feels like it too. Beautiful!

We make it to Wilson, Wyoming! Time for lunch and then I head back over on foot.

The weather changes fast here. Beautiful on the way over, snowing hard on the way back.

Snow plow heading up to do some work in the fresh snow.

This sign cracks me up. How many places have a sign that says, "skijoring" on them.

Susie, Heather, Sharon and Tammy out on Bovine Bliss

Momma and baby moose on Channel Lock

A random shot of a horse kissing me. His name is Cisco.

Even more random. I was in town and saw this Chukar. It's a game bird. What the heck was it doing wandering around Driggs, ID?
